Our major project for this section of NMAC 5108 will be to collaborate on improving several articles to bring them up to Wikipedia FA standards. We will work as a class on several articles, and you will be allowed to work collaboratively or individually on an article, or articles, of your choice.

This project will be broken into two parts: articles that everyone must contribute to and those chosen by you to develop individually or with partners.

Articles will be evaluated by the Wikipedia Evaluation Rubric. Watch the introductory video from WikiEdu.

Treat these projects like your course research papers: while weekly assignments will ask you to accomplish specific tasks on Wikipedia, it is up to you to work on these projects in a consistent manner throughout the semester in order to meet the deadline.

Articles to Be Edited by All

Requirement: Significant contributions on one of the articles listed below.

I will work as the major editor, and you all will be my assistants. We will coordinate on the articles’ talk pages and edit them consistently throughout the semester. So, unlike a traditional paper where you tend to write most of it in the last part of the class, you should begin editing early in the semester and develop the habit of editing Wikipedia daily with your additions and corrections. Our goal is to revise both of the these articles so that they meet Wikipedia FA standards. While you may work on both of these articles, I recommend you choose one to contribute to, not both.

  • The Prisoner of Sex — see the banner for the article’s major issues; these should all be corrected and the article improved.
  • Stabbing of Adele Morales — this article uses some biased sources and contains some erroneous information that needs to be vetted with additional research.

Evaluations will consider the final state of each article as a whole using the rubric linked above and individual contributions. For example, say the final evaluation of the article earns it a 95 as a whole, but your contributions as an editor were not so strong, earning you a 75. Therefore, your final grade would be the average of the two: 85.

Articles for Individual Development

Requirement: Significant improvements on an existing article or a strong new article of your choice.

Choose to edit or write a new article from the choices below. Before beginning work, be sure your subject will pass the Wikipedia notability test. You may work individually or with partners on this requirement.

  • Write an original article on a Georgia Woman in Red.
  • Significantly edit or write an article about your hometown.
  • Significantly edit or write an article about a hobby or interest that you already have significant knowledge of or interest in.
  • Significantly edit or write a new article in your discipline or profession.
  • Propose an article or idea.

Evaluations will be based on individual contributions and the state of the final article at the end of the semester using the rubric linked above. Your goal is to write the best article possible working toward Wikipedia FA standards, and while your individual contributions might be strong, if the final article is lacking, that will affect your final grade.
