Site and Network Updates (Spring Edition)

Updating the look and feel on my theme and other network updates.

📓 March 29, 2025

What a week. While my grad students are generally doing well, I find myself spending quite a bit of time on those two sections. Part of that has to do with the way I set up the course—we’re working more like collaborators on projects, so I’m involved in much of the work.

Anyway, I wanted to take a break, so I decided to make a change with my journal. ChatGTP and I wrote a template for journal posts: a bar at the top of the entry that would give the date, add the subtitle/description at the top of the page, and the correct date category at the bottom. We designed the look of it, though I might be tweaking that a bit more, and changed all of the headers.

I’ve been wanting to use actual titles for my posts, rather than dates, and I think this is a good way to go about it. I know I’m weird for using Mediawiki as a journal, but it’s such a great platform, and I never get tired of tweaking it. And now with my programming helper, I’ve been really tweaking it.

So, while the guy from Cox was messing with my network and thankfully getting the speeds back to where they should be, I was playing with my web site. It felt good to get away from work. The Cox technician recommended that I upgrade the firmware in my router, too. I hadn’t done it in a while—at least since I replaced the factory firmware with OpenWRT a few years ago. Well, I found an upgraded firmware and did the deed. Everything seemed to go well; however, I now lose all wifi for about 5–10 seconds every now and then. And, my download speeds are now slower. Why can’t I get a break?

So now I’m going to replace the router and maybe even my switch. I was getting download speeds of over 500 Mbps directly connected to the modem, so now I’m going to obsess over this for a while. Maybe I need to get a more robust router and just connect a mesh wifi system to it. Just something else to figure out.
